Both, I guess. I'm thinking primarily of that ideological image of "the
family" which shines through so many of the pundits' mouthings
on teenagers (their parents don't do this and do do that) or in the
letters to the editor of aggressive Christians or in Margaret Thatcher's
formula that society doesn't exist, only individual and families.
Probably
"it" never existed, except in such imaginations, which is what makes
"it" so hard to pin down.

I have read only the first of Stephanie Coontz's 3 books on private life.

Her 2d and 3d deal with the 20th century and I suspect are illuminating,
as her first certainly is.
