For the record: no I'm not against memorizing "anything." Poetry,
history,  etc.  and no, I';m not against exposing children to religion
or anything else in a serious critical way.  but stuffing their heads
full of hundreds of pages  of "sacred texts"?  Only true believers do
this, and the results in my opinion are not happy. rigid early religious
training is very hard to get rid of.  you may leave the  actual beliefs
behind, but the personality structure remains. the jesuits used to say,
give us a boy till he is seven, and we have him for life!
  I wonder how thrilled the "marxists" on this list would be if it
wasn't fundamentalist muslims and the Koran at issue but, let's say,
Opus Dei  or Orthodox judaism.
  Still, I'd love to hear the little boy "interpret" the Koranic
passages about women!
