The group Gaia Teatro de La Habana is currently staging Cocinando con Elvis
(Cooking with Elvis) at the Avellaneda Hall of Havana?s Teatro Nacional.
Under the general direction of Sebastián Doggart and the co-direction of
Eduardo Eimil and Lázaro Alderete, the production could be attractive for
all those who have admired The King of Rock & Roll.

The comedy, by English playwright Lee Hall ?the scriptwriter of the
unforgettable film Billy Elliot?, was known in Cuba for the first time in
the year 2000 by way of Project Gaia, the company that is now performing it
on stage.

After the first scene, the Prologue, the audience knows that, as announced
on the program, it?s in the presence of a dark comedy of profound pessimism.

Set in New Castle, England, Cocinando con Elvis centers on the family
relations around music, sex, and food. Its story line announces, above all,
the urgent search for happiness and the existential conflicts presented
along the way. 

The plot includes four characters: the father, an impersonator of Elvis,
paralytic due to a car accident (Iván Colás); the anorexic and alcoholic
mother with an insatiable sexual appetite (Esther Cardoso); Jill, the
fourteen-year old daughter, overweight and excessively interested in the
kitchen (Yailin Coppola) and Stuart, the young baker, the mother?s lover,
who puts an end to the false calm that existed between mother and daughter
when he moves into the house and establishes relations with the three
members of the family (Luis Toledano).

Following the Aristotelian principle, conflicts unfold to then arrive at an
?apparently happy? denouement, despite the fact that the script never
suggests a tangible solution to the crises of each character.

The show, loaded with irony and a language that was too local from one
minute to the next, becomes a work of constant, foreseeable speeches, full
of hallucination on the part of the father. These instants are a
breaking-off of the piece?s dramatic course, a kind of remembrance of the
character, in which he imitates ?The King? and dubs his most popular songs. 

Here lies the weak point of this production; after almost two hours, the
speeches of an ?Elvis? that in the end doesn?t even symbolize the laughable
figure of what ?The King of Rock? was, are extremely monotonous for the
audience. These declines in the dramatic parabola that intends to reach an
unachievable humorous intensity in the production don?t escape the critical
eye.

Nevertheless, the artistic production of Esther Cardoso and the flamboyant
stenographic design of Humberto Rosales are worth mentioning ?a mobile home
that adapts itself to the situations of the plot, which take place either in
a living room, a kitchen, the daughter?s bedroom, or the toilet.

The greatest achievement of Cocinando con Elvis is undoubtedly the ephemeral
entertainment it provides the public with, even without escaping from what?s
customary. This time, The King didn?t make people dance. He simply mingled
with common people, and as it?s expressed at the end of the play, ?he
cooked, for a brief second, a moment of goodness or a smile.?

Por estos días Gaia Teatro de La Habana estrena la pieza Cocinando con Elvis
en la sala Avellaneda del Teatro Nacional de la capital. Con la dirección
general de Sebastián Doggart y codirección de Eduardo Eimil y Lázaro
Alderete, la puesta en escena pudiera resultar llamativa para los que desde
siempre han admirado a ese icono de la música que fue el rey del rock &
roll.

La comedia, que pertenece al dramaturgo inglés Lee Hall ?guionista del
entrañable filme Billy Elliot?, llegó a nuestro país por primera vez en el
año 2000 por el Proyecto Gaia, compañía que ahora la lleva a las tablas.

Después de la primera escena, el Prólogo, el espectador puede confirmar que
ciertamente, como anuncia el programa, está en presencia de una comedia
negra de hondo pesimismo.

Ubicada en New Castle, Inglaterra, Cocinando con Elvis tiene en su núcleo
central relaciones familiares en torno a la música, el sexo y la comida. Su
argumento anuncia sobre todo, la búsqueda imperiosa de la felicidad y los
conflictos existenciales que de esa búsqueda devienen.

La trama encierra cuatro personajes: el padre, imitador de Elvis, paralítico
producto de un accidente automovilístico (Iván Colás); la madre anoréxica y
alcohólica con una apetencia sexual insaciable (Esther Cardoso); Jill, la
hija de catorce años, gorda y desmedidamente interesada en la cocina (Yailin
Coppola) y Stuart, el joven panadero, amante de la madre, quien trunca la
calma fingida entre madre e hija cuando se instala en el domicilio y
establece relaciones con los tres miembros de la familia (Luis Toledano).

Siguiendo el principio aristotélico, los conflictos se van desatando para
luego llegar a un "aparente feliz" desenlace. A pesar de que el texto nunca
propone una solución tangible a las crisis de cada personaje.

El espectáculo, cargado de ironía y con un lenguaje, por momentos, demasiado
local, deviene una obra con parlamentos constantes, previsibles en los
espacios alucinatorios del padre. Estos instantes conforman una ruptura del
curso dramático de la pieza, una especie de remembranza del personaje en
donde imita al "rey" y dobla sus canciones más populares. Aquí reside el
punto débil de la puesta en escena, luego de casi dos horas, son harto
monótonas para el espectador las intervenciones de un "Elvis" que, en
definitiva, no simbolizaba siquiera a la figura risible de lo que fue el Rey
del Rock. No escapan al ojo crítico estos declives en la parábola dramática
que pretende una intensidad humorística inalcanzable en la puesta en escena.

Sin embargo, es meritorio destacar la producción artística de Esther Cardoso
y el llamativo diseño escenográfico de Humberto Rosales. Una casa rodante
que se acomoda según la trama. Las situaciones se desarrollan en una sala,
la cocina, la recámara de la hija y el baño, indistintamente.

El mayor acierto de Cocinando con Elvis reside, sin lugar a dudas, en el
efímero entretenimiento que proporciona al público, aún sin escapar de lo
habitual. Esta vez el Rey no hizo bailar, sencillamente se mezcló con las
personas comunes y como bien se dice al final de la obra, "cocinó un
momentico de bondad o una sonrisa, sólo por un breve segundo."
