RME airlifts humanitarian aid to Cuba

MOSCOW, September 4 (Itar-Tass) -- One of two planes of the Russian Ministry for Emergencies (RME) with humanitarian aid for people suffered from the hurricane Gustav has landed in Cuba, ITAR-TASS learnt at the RME information department.

âA transport plane Il-76 with tents and foodstuffs for residents of Cuba who suffered from the calamity landed in the airport of Havana today,â a RME spokesman said. He said that another RME plane with a similar batch of humanitarian aid is on its way to the island.

The RME plans to make two more special flights with humanitarian aid to Cuba.

On September 1, Dmitry Medvedev instructed to render urgent aid to Cuba in connection with the effects of a devastating hurricane. A corresponding instruction was given to Russian Minister for Emergencies Sergei Shoigu.

The western province of Cuba Pinar del Rio was most seriously hit by the hurricane Gustav. The powerful cyclone brought rains to the western part of the island causing serious floods in the south-western coast of the country.

As a result of the calamity, about 20 people were injured. The hurricane caused great economic damage, the amount of which has not been calculated yet. Thousands of dwelling houses were damaged. Electric power and telephone communication lines were also damaged.
