Cuba Continues to Overhaul Railway Adding New Locomotives
LOURDES PEREZ NAVARRO

Deputy Minister of Transportation Antonio Puente said that 11 more of the
100 Chinese locomotives set to revamp the country?s railway system will be
up and running next week, pulling cars loaded with fuel, cement, containers,
food and other cargo.
The new locomotives are the same as the first 12 acquired from China in
January 2006; another 40 will arrive in the coming months and the order will
be completed in 2009. Twenty-eight Russian locomotives are also expected to
arrive this year.
The Chinese locomotives are DF7G-C, with 2,500 horsepower engines that run a
maximum of 120 kmh/hr. They are fully equipped and weighted to work on Cuban
railroad tracks.
The process of overhauling the country?s railroad transportation system
begun three years ago when the government invested in new container cars,
fuel tanks, iron silos for cement and several new railway booths.
Llegaron otras 11 locomotoras chinas

contenedores, alimentos y otras cargas.
