The Real Discovery

SUCRE, Venezuela.?Land!  The outline of the Macuro Mountains in the
Venezuelan state of Sucre began to be visible from the prow, amid the
violent sea that honors its name: Boca de Dragon or Dragon Mouth.

A GROUP OF CUBANS AND VENEZUELANS BRING EDUCATION TO THE FISHING COMMUNITY. 

The impressive landscape interrupts conversations on board, until someone
warns that 508 years earlier that same fury pushed Christopher Columbus?
caravels to the shore, forcing the Spaniards to make their first incursion
in the Americas.

The Cuban internationalists have come to Macuro - baptized by Columbus as
?the land of grace?- to give fresh impetus to education.

RESCUED FROM OBLIVION

While talking about social programs is old news in the rest of Venezuela?s
territory, in remote fishing communities like this one, with some 2,000
inhabitants, the fight against illiteracy or the first doctor?s
consultations under the Barrio Adentro community health care program are
quite an event.

On the small islands surrounding the coastline of the state of Sucre, east
of Caracas, there are still approximately 1,500 people who don?t know how to
read and write.  The number is insignificant in proportion to the 79,000 in
the state who finished the Cuban Yo Sí Puedo (Yes I Can) literacy teaching
method, but the idea is not to leave anybody behind. Thus, the teaching
missions, with Cuban collaborators along them, take to the sea. 

?Our fishing communities have always been treated with contempt. If you went
to an institution, they slammed the door in your face.  At clinics, they
didn?t want to see us because they said we smelled like fish,? recalls Sonia
Rivero. ?They never worried about building schools for us.  Children became
adults, established their families, and never learned.?

Habit made your children?s education unimportant. ?My father didn?t go to
school. He was more interested in having me work, so I left school,? said
22-year old Ambrosio Ozuna, who has taken up the challenge of starting all
over again. 

He has already joined Mission Ribas the program for adults to complete
junior high and high schools. Other men and women with similar life stories
are also going returning to classrooms.

THEY USED TO CHEAT US

The impact of the government?s social programs stands out in every aspect of
life. ?They used to cheat us with the weight when we sold selling our
sardines. They also cheated us when it came to signing the receipts. But now
we have joined in cooperatives, we are studying, and they can?t cheat us
anymore,? said Damilis Mata, from El Congrio, a community of 300 fishermen
and women at the Araya peninsula.

There are another 54 villages like El Congrio in the area.  To visit them
can be like trying to get to the end of a labyrinth. The goal is to find the
very last inhabitant. 

VENEZUELA?S AMBITIOUS SOCIAL PROGRAMS ARRIVE TO SUCRE?S REMOTE FISHING
COMMUNITIES.

That?s how they found Carmen Pineda, a 52 year-old woman that dreams about
writing her name. ?I?m embarrassed to sign with my fingerprint,? she deeply
regrets.

However, the concern of taking education to every corner responds to deeper
needs. In seven weeks ?once she has finished the last lesson of Yo Sí Puedo,
Carmen will be able to read, for example, the constitutional reform that is
now capturing the nation?s interest and that includes, among its
propositions, the right of fishermen and women to social security.

>From one island to the next, the experience is repeated. And in this way
until they reach Macuro, where, five centuries ago, the rough sea forced
Columbus to disembark. It was one of his many accidents, but history records
it as the arrival of the conquerors to American solid ground.

With their pants rolled up and their notebooks and methodological guides
inside a plastic bag to protect them, the Venezuelan and Cuban educators
jump out of the boats, and throw themselves into the water.

Shortly after, at improvised classrooms, the real discovery begins.

SUCRE.? ¡Tierra! Las montañas de Macuro comienzan a dibujarse ante la proa,
en medio de las sacudidas de un mar violento que hace honor a su nombre:
Boca de Dragón.

El paisaje imponente interrumpe las conversaciones a bordo, hasta que
alguien advierte que hace 508 años, esa misma furia empujó las carabelas de
Cristóbal Colón hacia la costa, forzando la primera incursión de los
españoles en el suelo continental americano.

Son internacionalistas cubanos, y han llegado a Macuro, bautizada por el
Gran Almirante como "la tierra de gracia", para dar un impulso a la
educación.

PESCADORES DEL OLVIDO

Mientras en el resto de Venezuela hablar de misiones sociales ya no es
noticia, en apartadas comunidades de pescadores, como esta de 2 000
habitantes y un centenar de analfabetos, la lucha contra el analfabetismo o
las primeras consultas del programa Barrio Adentro son un acontecimiento.

En el estado de Sucre, 400 kilómetros al este de Caracas, aún existen 1 500
iletrados en las pequeñas islas que rodean la costa. El número no es
significativo en proporción a los 79 000 que vencieron el método Yo sí
puedo, pero señala la necesidad de reforzar la atención a estas zonas
tradicionalmente excluidas. Por ello, las misiones educativas, y
colaboradores cubanos con ellas, se hacen a la mar para asistirlas de cerca.

"Los pescadores artesanales siempre fuimos tratados con desprecio. Si uno
iba a una institución, le cerraban las puertas y en las clínicas no nos
querían atender porque decían que olíamos a pescado", recuerda Sonia Rivero.
"Nunca se preocuparon por crearnos escuelitas. Los niños se hacían adultos,
constituían familia y no estudiaban".

La costumbre hizo que la educación dejara de parecer importante en la
formación de los hijos. "Mi papá no es un hombre estudiado. Le interesaba
más que yo trabajara, por eso dejé la escuela", ejemplifica Ambrosio Ozuna
(22 años), quien ha asumido el reto de volver a comenzar.

Ya ingresó a la Misión Ribas, para completar la secundaria y el
bachillerato. Otros hombres y mujeres con historias parecidas, también están
retornando a las aulas.

LAS ISLAS DEL DESCUBRIMIENTO

El impacto de las misiones sociales resalta en todos los órdenes de la vida.
"Antes nos hacían trampa con el peso, cuando se realizaba la venta de la
sardina, y también a la hora de firmar los recibos, pero ahora nos hemos
unido en cooperativas, estamos estudiando y no nos pueden engañar", afirma
Damilis Mata, de El Congrio, una comunidad de 300 pescadores en la península
de Araya.

En la zona hay más de 54 poblados similares y recorrerlos a veces pareciera
estar desentrañando un laberinto. Pero la meta es llegar hasta el último
habitante.

Así encuentran a Carmen Pineda (52 años), una analfabeta que sueña con
escribir su nombre. "Uno siente vergüenza cuando tiene que firmar con el
dedo", se duele.

Sin embargo, la preocupación por llevar la educación a todos los espacios
responde a necesidades más profundas. Dentro de siete semanas, cuando haya
vencido la última lección del Yo sí puedo, Carmen podrá conocer, por
ejemplo, el texto de la reforma constitucional que acapara la atención del
país y que incluye entre sus propuestas, el derecho de los pescadores a la
seguridad social.

De una isla a otra, la experiencia se repite. Así hasta Macuro, donde hace
cinco siglos, la marejada forzó a desembarcar al célebre navegante. Fue uno
de sus tantos accidentes, pero la historia lo recogió como la llegada de los
conquistadores a la tierra firme americana.

Con los pantalones remangados, y los cuadernos y las guías metodológicas
dentro de un nailon, para protegerlas del agua, los educadores venezolanos y
cubanos se lanzan del bote. Poco después, en aulas improvisadas, comienza
