[CubaNews] Very Real Abstractions (Art commentary)

Very Real Abstractions

Virginia Alberdi Benitez

La Acacia gallery's current exhibition of Cuban abstract painting in no way
yields to a fashionable trend, but rather to an esthetic attitude loyal to
the most diverse expressions of this international tendency of 20th century
vanguard artists.

JULIA VALDES HIGHLIGHTS LYRICAL SUGGESTION.

The exhibition includes the work of 11 artists and will be on display until
the end of April. The abstract works are in no way a distancing from
reality. Once and for all, we must leave behind the idea that reality is
synonymous with imagination. Here is a look at two different visions of
abstract painting present in the exhibition.

MANOLO COMAS USES POLISHED SURFACES AND METALLIC REFERENCES.

The work of Julia Valdes immediately draws attention to the quality of the
texture, in which in a oblique manner she communicates a subtle poetic
sensation, a kind of state of being that caresses the eyes of the observer.

However, when we approach the work of Manolo Comas, the first idea that
comes to mind is that of futility, from the metallic consistency of the
surfaces and spatial cleanliness of the composition.

Both, like the rest of the artists in the showing, work with imaginary
realities, which can only be completed by way of the sensitive commitment
they establish with the viewers.
