Personally, I think Shannon should be seen in context. I would certainly
have a close look at John Mingers work... Mingers straddles the worlds of
critical realism, social ontology and systems theory in a way very few
others do (although Paul Stokes springs to mind as someone also well worth
looking at... although more systems-oriented than CR): 'information' is very
much at the interface between systems theory and philosophy, and it can make
both communities feel a bit uncomfortable - which, in my view, is what makes
it so important.
