Mervyn,

I just checked once again with Amazon U.S., which currently sells the
Dictionary for $145 (!!), so don't assume those of us on this side of the
Atlantic have ready access to the dictionary.  Could you provide the entry,
please?  I'm curious to see how the etymology of "deontology", which derives
from the Greek "deon", meaning duty, links up with the etymologoy of
"ontology", which derives from the Greek "onto", meaning being.  (I'm afraid
I too am an admirer of the OED, whose merits Tobin so nicely laid out.)

OK, you've shifted. One implication seems to be that there's no more
"jargon" in Bhaskar than in Darwin, Marx or Freud. I agree.

Re the etymology of deont(ology), please see my entry on "ont/de-ont" in
Dictionary of CR, last paragraph.

It's legal niceties aside, "libel" is a good English word basically meaning
false and damaging to a person's reputation. I'm surprised you don't find it
fits a claim in a scholarly tome as off-beam as "appallingly badly written"
(in relation to DPF). There's something of a culture of bad-mouthing the
prose of DPF which I'm trying to combat because I think it's excellent of
its kind and I don't want people to be put off reading the book on that
account. I'm sure you don't really have a problem with that.

When "ontological depth" and "ontological monovalence" are up there (?) in
the OED along with "differance" and "Dasein" we'll have a party.
