[Critical-Realism] Neologisms in Critical Realism
Hi all,
I think that the discussion over the neologisms in CR is a good one,
although I'm not sure where I come down on the issue. However, I think that
we should seriously consider the extent to which neologisms are actually
used. I have quickly attempted to assess this issue by using the glossary
in Plato Etc. as an indicator of neologisms. Obviously there are problems
with this methodology. For example, the glossary is focused on the most
abstruse terms, which might increase the number of neologisms as opposed to
terms that are otherwise already in use. Furthermore, it is not necessarily
clear that all of the neologisms made by Bhaskar are given in the glossary.
Finally, there could be disagreements with the way I have categorized the
terms. However, I have listed all of the terms and how I categorized them
below.
In Plato Etc., there are a total of 76 glossary terms. Of these terms, only
30% (23) are what we could actually term "neo-logisms." The rest (70%) are
either a 'combination of known terms' (9 terms; 12% of the total), 'known
terms' (36 terms 47%), or 'known terms with different connotations' (8
terms; 11% of the total).
Thus, whatever difficulties that exist with understanding critical realism,
this brief (and very problematic) analysis indicates that neo-logisms (terms
made up by Bhaskar) aren't necessarily the problem.
In any case, my methodology is certainly problematic, but I think that the
results may help us in terms of understanding just how much of Bhaskar's
work really does consist of neo-logisms.
Best,
Brian
