Re: BHA: what is the role of philosophy?
Hi Mervyn,
At 10:50 PM 05/13/2002 +0100, you wrote:
This sounds exactly like Bhaskar's 'categorial realism'. So why is
Bhaskar a subjective idealist and Hegel - not an objective idealist -
but a materialist? In reality Hegel is by common consent an objective
idealist, and Bhaskar imo is a metaphysical realist (full stop - neither
materialist nor idealist, whether objective or subjective).
In the part of your post that I deleted, you said something about putting
spirit in a box with a lock on it. I gather that you mean that this cannot
be done, and I think it can no more be done with Bhaskar than with
spirit. As your post about his forthcoming books makes clear, he cannot be
locked into a box. It makes sense to call him a "metaphysical realist,"
as long as we don't let the label become a box with a lock on it.
Regards,
Dick
