BHA: Alethia, Absence, Santa, Race

Hi everyone,

I have been watching from the sidelines (as is my policy) with growing
interest the unfolding of the Great Santa (Etc) Debate.

*Alethia2* will carry a piece by Bob Carter on 'race' which in the
nature of the case (as one of you has pointed out) raises similar
issues: the 'races' which racists believe in have never anywhere
existed, etc., and which sketches the elements of a CR sociological
approach to them.

I would very much like one (or several) of you to do a (perhaps more
informal) companion piece, not so much reporting and summarizing (but
that too) as reflecting on your discussion and linking it briefly to the
issues raised by Bob. I'm sure he'd be prepared for me to make his draft
article available for this purpose.

I would prefer not to go behind your backs and approach individuals
privately in the first instance. _You_ might want to decide (and should,
it seems to me), and to pass a draft around among yourselves for
comment.

Equity would suggest not Colin (he is doing another piece) and not
Caroline (unless she's a glutton for punishment: she did a piece for
Alethia 1; but we do need women authors).

The deadline for copy is July 31st. The article could be up to 3,000
words.

Incidentally, I don't think you should be demoralized by failure to
reach consensus: the issues are exceedingly complex (absence, reference,
truth, ideology, etc!)

Best wishes
--
