Â
Another Knowledge Is Possible: Beyond Northern Epistemologies
Â
Edited by Boaventura de Sousa Santos
Â
ISBN 9781844672561 / Â24.99 / $34.95 / Paperback
Â
This is the third volume of the series Reinventing Social Emancipation: Towards New Manifestoes series. Another Knowledge Is Possible explores the struggles against moral and cultural imperialism and neoliberal globalization that have taken place over the past few decades, and the alternatives that have emerged in countries throughout the developing world from Brazil and Colombia, to India, South Africa and Mozambique. In particular it looks at the issue of biodiversity, the confrontation between scientific and non-scientific knowledges, and the increasing difficulty experienced by great numbers of people in accessing information and scientific-technological knowledge.
Â
Praise for the Reinventing Social Emancipation project:
Â
âAt last, someone is putting concrete analysis on âcounter-hegemonic globalization from the bottom up.â Boaventura de Sousa Santos has assembled social scientists from Latin America, Africa, and Asia to describe another kind of democracy, full of lessons for the benighted countries of the north, where it should be mandatory reading for serious people.â
Immanuel Wallerstein, Yale University
Â
âIn the 1980s Margaret Thatcher declared âThere is no alternative.â At the beginning of the 21st century the World Social Forum replied, âAnother World is Possible.â The project, Reinventing Social Emancipation, is a passionate and wide-ranging effort at enriching our vision of that other world.â
Erik Olin Wright, University of Wisconsin
Â
Boaventura de Sousa Santos is Professor of Sociology at the University of Coimbra (Portugal) and ILS Distinguished Scholar at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He has been an active participant in the World Social Forum. His most recent books in English are Democratizing Democracy: Beyond the Liberal Democratic Canon and Toward a New Legal Common Sense: Law, Globalization and Emancipation.
