Re: [AUT] Hardt interview
Hi Nate
Good to hear from you. My comment was kind of tongue in cheek, but you
picked up that it was making a semi-serious point as well. But no I'm
not saying what 'we' should be discussing because I really have no idea
who or what 'we' are at this point. But I stay subbed because, like you,
I did once learn a lot from people on this list and I have very good
memories of the Harald, Chris, etc. period. So much so that when the
strong 'pomo turn' happened it took me by surprise. I haven't exactly
made a secret of my dislike for that kind of thing, although I have
learned the futility of engaging with it on any polemical level. The
kind of satirical remark that I made and which you have now responded
too, is about as far as I go these days, even though the politically
debilitating effects of the kinds of academic postmodernism that I saw
on this list at one stage are pretty obvious to me.
I still have very robust debates elsewhere with Chris, who is now
pretty anti-autonomia, unlike myself - I just don't like the pomo side
of it. So yeah, no more name calling, but on the other hand no apologies
either.
Take care
Tahir

hi Tahir,
It's pretty clear to anyone who has been on here a while that the list
has declined majorly. When I first was on here, Chris Wright and
others were on here who were very active and came from a general left
communist perspective with interests in Hegel and Hegelians. The next
wave was people of a more anarchist bent and people interested in
Deleuze and Negri etc in a philosophical way. Along the way
discussions of world and movement events and events in people's own
workplaces (the latter was never much of a topic) came up as stuff
came up in the world off list. After Steve Wright, Angela Mitropolous,
and Thiago Oppermann signed off the list went down in a big way
compared to before and hasn't ever recovered.
At the same time, for as long as I can remember people have
periodically posted things like you are here, saying basically "this
list isn't doing what it should be doing, let's talk about something
else" without much of a suggestion of what that something else should
be. That's never worked as far as I can recall. Unfortunately even
when people have made suggestions of specific stuff there's often not
enough of a critical mass of people with time and energy. The good
conversations that have happened on here (I'm sure you remember, there
used to some really good ones, I know I learned a ton from aut-op-sy,
my political perspective would be much much worse has this list never
existed) have sort of just happened. Personally, I don't see that as
very likely at least in the near future.
To be honest, though, I prefer aut-op-sy as it is now to some of the
ugly name calling that's happened on the list before, said name
calling being a big part of why many of the better members of the list
have left on multiple occasions.
take care,
Nate
