Re: [AUT] Hardt interview

Yeah, sorry guys, I know I haven't done much on the list since I moved to Japan, but I guess living out here in the countryside has short-circuited my intellect. That and the fact that when I have something intelligent to say - which is not that often since I've moved here, being starved of any kind of intellectual conversation (proof that intellect does not reside in individuals but rather in interactions) - I'm supposed to say it in this bloody book manuscript I'm supposed to give to Routledge in September. You will be happy to know that Aut-Op-Sy has been one of the few places over the last few years that I actually found stimulating. But yes it has declined since Angela, Steve, and Thiago disappeared.

I think this list will revive sometime in the near future. When I get the chance to put some energy into it - maybe after September, when I have left Japan - I can contribute, annoy Tahir, start up some kind of controversy about something, maybe say some nasty things about Hegelians, and try to kick start it again ...

Or if I actually get this book in on time and it appears in January as advertised you can all tear it to shreds and I can flap about trying to defend it like Thomas's goldfish when he inevitable tips it out on the carpet before he stomps on it like that little girl on Kill Bill Vol. 2.

hi Tahir,

It's pretty clear to anyone who has been on here a while that the list
has declined majorly. When I first was on here, Chris Wright and
others were on here who were very active and came from a general left
communist perspective with interests in Hegel and Hegelians. The next
wave was people of a more anarchist bent and people interested in
Deleuze and Negri etc in a philosophical way. Along the way
discussions of world and movement events and events in people's own
workplaces (the latter was never much of a topic) came up as stuff
came up in the world off list. After Steve Wright, Angela Mitropolous,
and Thiago Oppermann signed off the list went down in a big way
compared to before and hasn't ever recovered.

At the same time, for as long as I can remember people have
periodically posted things like you are here, saying basically "this
list isn't doing what it should be doing, let's talk about something
else" without much of a suggestion of what that something else should
be. That's never worked as far as I can recall. Unfortunately even
when people have made suggestions of specific stuff there's often not
enough of a critical mass of people with time and energy. The good
conversations that have happened on here (I'm sure you remember, there
used to some really good ones, I know I learned a ton from aut-op-sy,
my political perspective would be much much worse has this list never
existed) have sort of just happened. Personally, I don't see that as
very likely at least in the near future.

To be honest, though, I prefer aut-op-sy as it is now to some of the
ugly name calling that's happened on the list before, said name
calling being a big part of why many of the better members of the list
have left on multiple occasions.

take care,
Nate

After all, at this point, let's face it, anything that is written is
as good as anything else

How about that? I thought I was the only one who had identified this
tendency of this list. I feel entirely vindicated now, after all this
time.
