One study you may be interested in reading is Lar T. Lih's 'Lenin
Rediscovered', due to come out in the Historical Materialism book series
with Brill Academic Press after the summer. It consists of a completely new
translation of What Is to Be Done? from the Russian and a nine-chapter
commentary which re-places the text in its historical, political and
polemical context (including the 1903 debates, the contemporaneous texts by
Trotsky, Luxemburg, Akselrod, Martynov, Martov, Plekhanov etc.). It is a
study which will transform the way most people see this text.

Taking a break from post-modernism...
Some very good Irish? Marxist activists are trying to set up a new party.
I'm thinking of writing up an article? critiquing party building but to do
so I want to fully understand how the party ideal developed. To this aim
I'm re-reading stuff around the RSDLP's 1903 congress and stuff around
the? Bernstein - Reform vs. Revolution debates.
However I don't think that's enough. I? need to know a? bit about the
emergence and growth of the German SPD in up to 1900. Unfortunately I know
very little about the growth of the SPD. I was wondering could someone
recommend a book or a pamphlet or an essay or an article that examines and
explains the growth of the SPD. I'm most interested in how it grew and was
organised under the Anti-Socialist Laws. And the shorter the text the
better.
