Taking a break from post-modernism...
Some very good Irish Marxist activists are trying to set up a new party. I'm thinking of writing up an article critiquing party building but to do so I want to fully understand how the party ideal developed. To this aim I'm re-reading stuff around the RSDLP's 1903 congress and stuff around the Bernstein - Reform vs. Revolution debates.
However I don't think that's enough. I need to know a bit about the emergence and growth of the German SPD in up to 1900. Unfortunately I know very little about the growth of the SPD. I was wondering could someone recommend a book or a pamphlet or an essay or an article that examines and explains the growth of the SPD. I'm most interested in how it grew and was organised under the Anti-Socialist Laws. And the shorter the text the better.
