Sure, okay.
I think the "per capita" figures are skewed by
"collectors" though, so you're going to get into a
whole weird tangle of commodity fetishism there.
Having lived close to my whole life in the States,
though, in rural, suburban and urban places, I
wouldn't characterize the society as "armed" in any
substantive way other than the fact that, if one is
*inclined* to do so, one can access fatal weapons (as
for revenge), though our disciplinary machine is also
advanced enough that the choice to shoot and kill
someone is essentially the choice to be imprisoned.
Gun ownership is very much tied up with identity
politics. It's a variety of conspicuous consumption,
not a mode of violent social interaction, to own guns
(definitely plural!), congregate at gun trade shows,
practice target shooting once a month or so at a
range, go on a ritual hunt once a year, affix a bumper
sticker saying as much on your car/truck, and so on.
Similarly, the liberal obsession with gun control (in
the US) is not really a public-health concern about
the externalities of this gun fetish culture (bloodier
"crimes of passion", tragedies with children, etc.) as
much as an objection to this culture and identity
itself. Gun fetishists *know* this--they are correct
in assessing a large part of gun-control sentiment as
being directed toward their identity as a whole.
A lot of it is undisentaglable from milleniarism. What
makes milleniarism so potent is that such a wide
diversity of narratives can be written on top of the
general form: the coming total crisis, which will
dissolve the subjects that we are, unless we are
imbued with a unique strength. It becomes a question
of: into what collective subject shall I dissolve
myself, best to weather this now-just-beginning
crisis? Should I be born again as a Christian? Should
I understand myself as a member of a racial community?
Should I understand myself as a worker? A "working
man"? ...etc.
I'm going to be a total asshole here and quote
Habermas: "In classical aesthetics, from Aristotle to
Hegel, crisis signifies the turning point in a fateful
process that, despite all objectivity, does not simply
impose itself from the outside and does not remain
external to the identity of the persons caught up in
it... Fate is fulfilled in the revelation of
conflicting norms against which the identies of the
participants chatter, unless they are able to summon
up the strength to win back their freedom by
shattering the mythical power of fate through the
formation of new identities.... *only* subjects can be
involved in crises."
>From a white-nationalist internet forum:
"I have no problems with non-gun owning White
Racialists. I keep spares for just such occasions! :)
You never know who's going to be at your house when/if
TSHTF*, so if you can arm your guests... you'll have
more help!"
*(TSHTF = the shit hits the fan)
