Actually, my understanding of the specific situation of oil prices is that
there is a genuine shortage of refining capacity right now (in part
connected with the situation in Iraq, but that is not the most significant
aspect.)  As such, the oil industry may be making a bundle, but there is an
actual semi-crisis in that industry as they seem to have little or no
capacity at the moment to expand production because they cannot refine that
expanded production (and there are serious concerns about oil reserves as
well.)

In that respect, Bush and Co. may in fact be semi-serious regarding
alternative energy solutions and I think that is connected to their
re-promoting of nuclear energy in the US, which has greatly benefited the
energy company I work for, as they have purchased their 2nd nuke in as many
years here on the East Coast.
