RE: Fambly Values was - RE: AUT: America Implodes

Thaigo,

I'm not sure what, of what I actually wrote,
you're taking issue with; or whether you're
responding to Harald, Chris or ...

I do agree with Chris that derision of 'the
masses' is "petty bourgeois," but think pinning
it down as an aspiration for technocratic control
is much more accurate description of motivation.
I'm not sure if you've read some of my stuff from
years ago on One Nation, but then as now, I think
that this aspiration has little to do with
fighting racism (or homophobia) and is an obstacle
to doing so. The 'coalition' assembled to fight
the crude xenophobia of One Nation included the
Democrats (zero-net immigration policy), the
Greens (Malthusians to the hilt), Labor (the
Socialist Left faction of which introduced the
mandatory internment policy) and the
Liberal-National Coalition (enough said).

In other words, that 'coalition' was just as
racist and xenophobic, they just put it more
politely, gave it practical form without the crude
epithets. The stories of how those parties
adopted terrible policies *after* the rise of One
Nation are chronologically and factually wrong.
Those fictions let people go on beleiving that the
source of those policies weren't the 'rational,
educated elites' (as they in fact were) but the
'ugly, sprawling masses.' The same thing goes
here. It's not the over-enthusiastic lunatic from
Family First who went around calling for lesbians
to be burnt at the stake that I fear, but the ways
in which this lets the polite homophobes off the
hook so they can do real damage.

Anyway, much of the damage has already been done
and it was done with the help of those who wanted
to be recognised: it has been legal to fire
someone from a job working with 'minors' in
Victoria if employers find out they're gay since
1991 (?) -- this was the fruit of the campaign for
homos to be *included* in "anti-discrimination"
laws, strangely enough. A similar result to
Don't Ask, Don't Tell. Show me the progress
that's about to be destroyed by the uncouth.

PS. Some rather more interesting contributions to
debates on the Marriage Act:
