Well, yes, if you look at the Republican Stronghold
states, they are made up of the old South and much of
the "Wild West". The Democrat strongholds are the
more urban, cultural centers in the Northeast and
coastal west, with an oasis here or there, as in
Illinois (also the cultural center of the midwest).
The phrase "ignorance of the countryside" comes to
mind. As always I recommend reading the novels of
Cormac McCarthy to understand the culture and history
of violence and racism that are particularly rampant
in these parts of America. Bush played upon those
backward sentiments
to win. Prior to the election he proposed a
Constitutional Amendment to ban Gay marriage. There
were during this election various state initiatives to
ban gay marriage...which suceeded. All of this was a
ploy by the Republican Party to excite their base of
support: it worked.

So the most reactionary wing of the US bourgeoisie now
has control of the executive branch for four more
years...they also strengthened their hold on
Congress...and, perhaps worst of all, it looks like
Bush will be able to appoint at least 2 judges to the
Supreme Court of the United States...and those
positions are lifetime positions (not just the
duration of a given administration). Bush does not
need to worry about re-election (US Presidents only
are allowed two terms) so he has even more license to
be wreckless. If you thought the first four years of
Bush were bad, the next 4 years are going to be even
worse.
