Hmm, well, I'll be honest. Clinton was an awful scumbag in many ways.
I hardly need to recount them, from the end of welfare to the attack
on the Sudanese aspirin factory. Personally, he does have a bad-boy
charm that I can deny - and he's very smart, informed, and a fluent
speaker, rare qualities in American presidents. Politically, though,
he was little different from his predecessor, Daddy Bush. But living
through the rule of Bush Jr has convinced me there's some value to
the lesser evil. Clinton was bad, but Bush Jr is horrible. It's not
just his awful policies, it's his poisonous fundamentalism and a
palpable influence in making the U.S. a dumber and meaner place than
it would otherwise be. I don't expect much if Kerry wins - just
marginally better policies and a somewhat more civilized discursive
environment. Maybe I'm getting old, but I never hated Reagan as much
as I hate George W. He makes everyday life painful.
