AUT: RE: Australia swings right

Thiago,

I've terrible premonitions. Well, it's not like
one needs to be a clairvoyant -- the basis on
which the Left tends to make decisions are
thoroughly predictable. But I've a terrible
feeling in any case that there'll be a wave of
self-righteous anti-FF rallies a la the
anti-Hanson/One Nation spectacles of some years
back.

And, like then, the fact that the ALP and
Liberal-National Coalition were firmly ensconced
in their policies prior to the appearance of FF
(or ON) will serve as a major distraction -- as
well as another opportunity for the Left to try
and recruit from among, and on the basis of,
stupidity and self-righteousness.

The ALP and Liberal-Nationals already passed the
'Marriage Protection Act' -- much like both of
them introduced (well, the ALP in 1992) the recent
version of 'Border Protection.' Other pre-FF
shifts in politics that can't be attributed to FF:
censorship; the particular 'stranger-danger,'
'too-much-freedom' take on child abuse; the
handing over of welfare/punishment services to
Churches, etc.

More, in this specific case, FF's dribbling
fundamentalism will be what makes
Abbot-and-Costello's [yes, they're real names of
Liberal Ministers] dribbling fundamentalism look
'reasonable.' Sure, the Libs are unlikely to
declare that "lesbians are witches who should be
burned at the stake," but then few imagine that
Buffy is a documentary series... Except of course
for those who successfully lobbied the Government
some years ago to include a 'viewing warning'
before such programmes: 'Supernatural Themes.'
Meaning: scary non-Christian stuff.
