Marx's discussion of the value producing labor of a clown in the Theories of
Surplus Value seems appropriate. Rubin has a discussion of it in his book,
in a section that I think is available online atwww.marxists.org. The
importance is the form of the labor, not whether it produces a thing or not.
Sadly, his very interesting discussion of Productive and Unproductive labor
is not there, as the last few chapters were never put up.
In either case, I think, despite some of Harry's valid objections to Rubin,
mostly IMO valid in relation to Rubin's treatment of technology as neutral,
Rubin is essential reading on this topic.
Cheers,
Chris
