Hey Thiago,
I didn't say don't look at the politics, but who's a yuppie? I mean, sure,
I think I know them when I see them, but lots of the computer geeks and
engineers I know are considered yuppies (as are a lot of the academics who
mix in similar social circles). I appreciate the motive, but its too fast
and loose in relation to this. Besides, white workers in this country have
a history of striking to keep Black workers out of certain jobs and men have
a history of striking to keep out women (and in Italy, as Steve Wright
recently pointed out to me, some of the autonomia folks in Rome, some of the
best, assaulted a feminist march.)
The issue is the politics. 'Yuppies' going on strike in support of other
workers or for better wages and working conditions are one thing and the
stuff in Venezuela is another, but you can't be certain that being a yuppie
guarantees one or the other (since yuppies are, IMO, part of the middle,
mediating layer of the population which has no independent politics of its
own.) Now, if you had said something about the capitalists, I wouldn't have
quipped.
Cheers,
Chris
