I agree, I think they probably thought that what they did was East Timor's best option. But you must remember thay are no longer revolutionaries, there vision is for a viable East Timor within capitalism. If this is your goal then they probably did the right thing.
Also see my earlier response to Harald. I really think that given the situation it would have been hard for Indonesia to crack down without Australian support.
