hi,
there is a negrist paper called Multitude in France and also a mailing list
linked to this paper. There was a few months ago a message on it about this
'multitude of chinese sans papiers' collective, wich pleased everybody
because of the use of multitude word, but explained clearly it was a
practictal find froma dictionary, without any relation to the paper and any
Negri influence. This was related by people active in both sans-papier
movement and the review.
Why have they chose this word in a dictionnary ? As far as I remember,
here's the story : the original chinese name means something "collective of
a great number of chinese sans papiers', or 'collective of ten thousands of
chniese sans-papiers' but for practictal questions of consomns
prononciation, it was very difficult to say the french word for 'great
number' (un grand nombre) because there's not a good pronounciation
correspondance for the the "r" in the two languages. So they search for a
translation with less "r" and wtched in a french-chinese dictionnary, where
the word was translated "Multitude", very sounding and easy to pronounce
with both accents. So...
Sure Negri-influenced people are present in the "support people" of the
sans-papiers movement, but not every chinese sans-papier in Paris have read
Empire and Workers against the state... sorry for the fact...
