Midnight Notes has a short piece on the US anti-war movement. It is posted=20
to the New Commons site (thank you) =20
http://www.commoner.org.uk/02-7groundzero.htm - it is however erroneously=20
attributed solely to George Caffentzis, who is one of the members of Midnigh=
t=20
Notes, rather than properly attributed to the Midnight Notes Collective. In=20
any event, here is the introduction and list of the section heads. Comments=20
and discussion are of course welcome. Monty

An Essay Addressed to the U. S. Anti-war Movement

The Passions that encline men to Peace, are Fear of Death; Desire of such=20
things as are necessary for commodious living; and a Hope by their Industry=20
to obtain them.

1. Introduction.=20
There is now a fledgling anti-interventionist, anti-war movement in the US.=20
It will have a lot of work to do in the near future, although the present=20
threat of war on Iraq is the most pressing issue it faces. The question is:=20
can the antiwar movement do its work effectively and successfully? At the=20
moment it is not completely marginalized, if the votes in Congress are any=20
indication. On October 9, between one-quarter to one-third of the=20
congressional representatives voted against granting George W. Bush "war=20
powers." But in order to show itself as expressing the majority perspective=20
in this country, it needs new arguments, a new respect (as in "look again")=20
for its opponents, a deeper understanding of the reasons for the actions of=20
its opponents, and a realistic assessment of their weaknesses. For its old=20
arguments do not seem convincing to the majority of US citizens, and its lac=
k=20
of curiosity about its opponents and their reasoning is dulling its strategi=
c=20
sense.

[the section titles are:
Losing Arguments=20
Oil, War and Neoliberalism
An Antiwar Strategy
Conclusion: No Fear
