Not as essential perhaps as some of the other texts that have already been mentioned, but still very interesting is The New Class by Milovan Djilas.
One of the amusing things about the term 'state capitalism' is the way that it is so smoothly interchangeable with the term 'state socialism'. To me both are equally correct (or equally false).

I'm trying to get an overview of the debate on "state capitalism" (i. e.
the question of whether the USSR, China and other self-proclaimed
"socialist" states are/were in fact capitalist in character).
