Al Szymanski (sp?) Is the Red Flag Still Flying (I think an issue of URPE
journal) supports the arguement that the USSR was socialist. I don't agree,
but might be useful to consider that argument. In Eco-socialism or
Eco-Capitalism (Zed), a book I generally recommend, Sarkar agrees with
Syzmanski and adds other arguements.
Many thought Bahro was very useful, but I never did read it (The Alternative
in Eastern Europe). Bettelheim had 2-3 volumes Class Struggles in the USSR
(Monthly Review), and tho himself I guess a Maoist argued that a state
capitalist class emerged under Stalin (if I remember at all correctly, I read
first two many years ago). Lots of detailed info.
I think the first argument that USSR was state capitalist was
"Johnson-Forrest" (James and Dunayevskaya) tendency work -- eg State
Capitalism and World Revolution by CLR James, a facing reality pamphlet, have
no idea where it might be available.
