hey harald

as steve pointed out there are several kinds of
"christianities" that don't believe in hell... in
addition to those, there are multiple catholic
theologies that deny the existance of hella
altogether, and many of these argue that hell is a
state of mind caused by being an asshole to other
people and yourself. (there are some catholic
theologies that argue that there is no heaven either,
but that it is a state of mend as well, if anything...
there are even some that argue that "god" is the some
*material* total of the process of all life, etc. and
that there is no soul, no conscious god-being seperate
from us, etc.)

as for christ, in the original greek versions of the
bible, christ never once mentions hell. and its been a
while since i've read the bible, but i'm pretty sure
he never mentions it in the english translations,
either. which makes sense due to the fact that jews
don't believe in hell.

it appears that hell showed up sometime in the middle
ages. interestingly, most people who do believe in
hell believe in dante's hell, not the hell mentioned a
few times in the bible (with no specific destriptions
outside of the vague "fire and brimestone" stuff
[which some theologins argue was added into the bible
much later]).

as for satan, many theologins argue that the character
of satan was composited and added in the middle ages
as well. and thus there is no "satan" to speak of.

as far as the "nice stuff" being originated by
jesus... many folks now argue that there is a good
chance he actually did give the surmon on the mount,
or something close to it. which, interestingly enough,
was once denouced as communist by the mccarthy
commission in the u.s. (until they found out it was
from the bible... hee hee).
