Rob, the "humanistic" Jesus Christ belongs to Disney World.
There is no Christanity without Hell, just as there is no Christianity
without Satan. The whole of Jesus (not very orginal)
eschatolical profethood revolves around heaven and hell, around
the Judgement Day, which he preached would come within the
lifetime of his generation. To my knowledge, it did not. There
are however reasons to believe (although there has gone a long
time since I looked into these things) he was referring to hell on
earth (situated at the garbage disposal area outside of Jerusalem,
I seem to remember) and not only in afterlife. The "chosen few"
who would escape eternal pain were also to be chosen exlusivly
among Jews. Quite ironic, thinking of later developments. There
was no place for non-Jewish "dogs," though Jesus it seems, had
the power to make rare exceptions. Jesus was certainly not a
Christian, nor is it at all likely that he thought of himself as the son
of God in any literal sense.

I f you are looking for recipees for torture, the Bible is an exellent
source, all in the name of the struggle against Evil of course. As
such George Bush Jr. is much closer to the true spirit of these old
texts than Commie00's Catholic friend.

There is reason to go further into the contents of this old texts here.
Of course, like almost any code of Law, and with any Authority, there
has to be some nice parts (none if which originated with Jesus) if
they are to gain and maintain real social power. Insert some real
words of wisdom and success becomes all the more likely.
Christianity needs its humanists just as capitalism needs its liberals
and social democrats.

There are two critical points in this, it seems to me:

1) No Christianity without Hell and Satan. At least I've never heard
of any Christian claiming that each and everyone would be able to
join in the chartered trip to Heaven. The whole point would sort
of would be lost then, would it not? And the modern version
of the eternal pain being of psycolgical nature, does not make it
much better, does it?

2) The seeking of eternal Truth in ancient texts and the life and
words of a man who lived about 2 000 years ago.

Harald
