an increasingly common view held by even non-revolutionary

First, it seem to me that Catholocism without a institutionalized
hierarchy and a church structure, without Virgin Mary also
I expect, very much seems as a contradiction of terms --
pretty much as a Leninism without the party and state bit. None
of the libertarian theologist to my limited knowledge has either
suggested actually breaking with the highly hierarchical structure
of the Catholic Church, though they surely want an Authority
showing a greater social conscience. For the emancipation
of women, as well as for homosexuals, a clearer break with
Christanity as such would also surely be a step ahead.
Secondly, the church organisation prior to Constantine might
have been community based but hardly non-hierarchial. Is it
the church founded by Paul you are referring to? Sorry to say,
there is no contradiction between "community based" and a
very authoritarian patriarchical regime. Something the history
of Protestant and millenarian sects surely reveals.
And, of course, the Catholic Church has not been very keen
on fundamentalism. It has been far too merged with secular
power and wealth for that. Something tells me though that a
new Calvinist Catholicism is not the road to freedom.
