first, my friend, like all anarchists / commies,
rejects institutionalized hierarchy. so he rejects the
church structure, and believes that it should go back
to the non-hierarchial, community based model that
dominated church organization prior to the acceptance
of christianity by constantine. this is an
increasingly common view held by even
non-revolutionary catholics.

second, most catholics are not, nor have they ever
been, fundamentalists. however, more to the point, you
seem to want to reduce this discussion to "did god say
it" or "did the devil say it". most catholics believe
that the bible is falible, and was written by human
beings in an effort to understand the world and "god".
regardless, take a look at the books i brought up.
there is much that is interesting in them that will
surprise you. hanging unto the prejudiced and
reductive view of catholics doesn't really help
anything.

third, the bulk of revolutions *in europe* had an
anti-religious bent. most of the revolutions outside
of europe have had a decidedly religious bent. even to
this day (the zapatistas, for example, who are openly
very influenced by liberation theology... even the
atheists in the zapatista movement claim to be
influenced by it from what i understand).
