i may come off kinda weird here (esp. since i'm an
atheist), but the entity called the catholic church,
if understood as existing in folks who identify as
catholic, is far to complex to "enable facism" and be
"patriarchal, sexually repressive and reactionary" in
its totality.

case-in-point, one of my closest comrades is a fella
who considers himself a "catholic anarchist". he's
currently getting his degree with theology, with
particular emphasis on "liberation theology", which is
a theology that argues that the bible is actually an
extended argument for communism (see _marx and the
bible_ and _communism in the bible_), and thus a
christianity that is not revolutionary communist is a
contradiction; and process theology (which is just
crazy and interesting, and not what you would expect).


my point: its impossible to defend the catholic church
as an entity, but its equally ridiculous to attack in
total because of the various elements and factions
within it... many of which are very close, if not
almost identical, to the political positions most
represented on this list.
