star wars!?!
i don't know about this... as weird as it may sound to some here, nearly all
of the radicals and revolutionaries i am close to (and who grew up post-star
wars) were first radicalized by star wars. that is: the conflict between the
rebel alliance and the empire was the first thing that brought into our
young minds criticisms of authoritarianism, the necessity and legitimacy of
revolt (beyond simplistic, youthful rebellion), confronted us with questions
of violence and non-violence, etc. etc. ... and did it with lazer guns and
jedi knights!!!
besides, following the argument of the article itself, if the contradiction
being set up is between "liberal" and "conservative", how does it jive with
lucas' self-identification as a "far left liberal democrat" (in one of the
many post episode 1 interviews which discussed the many pot-shots taken at
the republican party in the film)?
