Re: AUT: Abolishing scholarships

hey people,

well, over here in British Columbia where students are getting incredibly
f***ed over by the new Liberal government (tuition is going up by 30 percent
every year for the next three years) the opposite kind of argument seems to
be made. Essentially it is being argued that universities will remain
inclusive insofar as the poor can get scholarships- of course, this refers
to the "deserving" poor while the riff raff are kept out. From my
perspective, it doesn't matter whether or not scholarships continue to
exist. If scholarships exist they simply mask the underlying realities of
"higher" education by creating the illusion that the poor are included. If
scholarship do not exist, the universities never see that money anyways. It
is a strategic manipulation by the ruling bloc either way. Hence, over here
the BC Liberals are abolishing the GTRFs which provide nearly forty percent
of the funding for graduate TAships. Now although the argument could be
made that that money will be spread around more evenly and more inclusively,
the fact of the matter is that the government is doing this to save
themselves money, leading to a serious reduction in the real income of
students. (I'm all worked up right now because 3,000 of the students here
just protested the tuition increase yesterday which culminated in mass
chants demanding "GENERAL STRIKE!")

in solidarity,

chris
