I cannot add nor detract from usage past. I comment
on current usage, which is what makes for current
definitions. Current usage among communists is
overwhelmingly dominated by the petty-bourgeois,
liberal-oriented socialist movement, where "left"
means "liberal" and "right" means "conservative."
The petty-bourgeois, liberal-oriented anarchist
movement uses the euphemisms "libertarian" and
"authoritarian" to mean "liberal" and "conservative."
In a great many ways, anarchism mirrors socialism.
Anarchism sees the conservative policies of
perservation of the existing state in socialist
countries, and labels the socialist movement as
"authoritarian."
The explicit bias is in both movements is that
liberalism is preferred to all else. Of course, both
movements deny furiously that they are anything but
the natural expression of resistance to capitalism,
the "will of the people," ad nauseum. Petty-bourgeois
movements obscure their class nature, and
working-class activists within these movements
generally do not throw off the blanket of denial so
deftly tucked around by petty-bourgeois "leaders."
