i don't know if this is effectively any different than many people dreaming
of and working to starting their own business of some sort (nearly everyone
i've ever worked with, esp. in factories and warehouses, have been working
on this... or at least dreaming of it).

i've always taken it as an aspect of effective decomposition. in fact, i
would say that the presence of this kind of thinking in the workplace
(school & home) is evidence, of a sort, of one's class position (and level
of decomposition). also keep in mind: the dream of this kind of
self-suficiancy is an aspect of the refusal of work (tho decomposed, yadda
yadda)...

however, on the other hand: if folks are talking about leaving work to start
a collectively-run business with one another, or other friends, there is
possibly something else going on entirely.
