AUT: Call for Papers: Democratization Conference

CONFERENCE
The Road to Democratization: Freeways and Detours

Duke University, October 19-21, 2001

Call for Papers
Submission Deadline: May 1, 2001

A variety of countries representing virtually every region of the world
have within the past twenty years instituted democratic or semi-democratic
reforms. External pressure has frequently played a key role in promoting
democracy throughout the world. International institutions have advanced
market reform as the most effective path to economic growth, and have
encouraged civil society for allowing citizens to organize and express
their needs and demands.

Within this context, democratization has led to both success and unmet
expectations. In this conference, we are inviting papers that investigate
the experiences of countries with democratization and the conditions that
promote or impede success. Papers may explore the links between
democratization and civil society, the rule of law, market reform,
international institutions, and domestic and international conflict. What
are the causes of failed attempts at democratization and different degrees
of democratization? Does democratization promote or dampen conflict? What
is the role of economic reform in democratization? Is a vigorous civil
society a pre-requisite for democracy? What is the effect of external
influence on democratization? Is it possible to develop an objective
standard for judging democratization, or has the evaluation of
democratization been guided by the foreign policy concerns of the major
Western countries? Possible themes of the conference include the relation
of democratization to:

=B7 International Institutions and Western Foreign Policy
=B7 Economic Reform
=B7 Domestic Resistance and Conditionality
=B7 Rule of Law and Accountability
