I suddenly feel quite old

Bob Miller's commnents are quite accurate so far as I can remember, although
I was never in Solidarity. But our little group on Merseyside were very much
influenced not just by the ideas, which we had problems with since we were
still siutating ourselves in a Left Communist tradition, but by the STYLE of
the Solidarity publications and the way they worked/related to those around
them. Truly refreshing - although stories of thousands of members are very
wide of the mark.

Would that today we could write as fluently and intelligently in a way that
workers could immediately pick up on.

Solidarity was able to hold together in its publications minute discussions
about the interaction of individual personalities in plants, offices and so
on and at the same time deal with highly complex and abstract arguments
rooted in the general political situation of the time. We eagerly looked
forward to getting hold of copies and even today in my loft I'm sure I've
got most of the stuff that was produced. Copies used to get passed around in
the car plants here until they fell apart. I have not seen that quality of
writing since those days, [mid to late 70s]- it was this paradox that led me
on to the notion of class composition, it would be impossible to recreate a
Solidarity type organisation today I believe.

Do not forget the archive of Red Notes material for the history of
Autonomous Marxism, especially the stuff translated from Italian for an
English speaking audience. It has lots of contemporary documents which serve
to illuminate what Negri and others were talking about.
