Kubhlai,
i have enjoyed your posts since joining the list, i
have not studied situationism closely, and look
forward to doing so soon, as your posts have
interested me in the topic.
but here i want to respond to your comments about
class backgrounds being more complex and varied. i
think this is not so, i think that race, moral and
cultural backgrounds are in fact what have become more
varied, and that class backgrounds are becoming
similar.
with the transition from mass worker (factory work
based on wages as labor's value) to socialized worker
(non-factory work based on information as labor's
value), all workers have been put on a much more equal
level. and since the labor of a working class person
is no longer based in the factory it puts this laborer
on a much more level scale with even some one such as
a high up executive in a corporation... this i believe
is at least one of the reasons why we are seeing white
collar worker's striking (for example boeing a few
months ago), and things such as doctor's unionizing...
labor militance is no longer restricted to one who
uses his/her hands or works in a factory...
in addition since workers have seen the factories
become mobile due to freer capital flows,
technological change, etc... there is some fear that
even the upper level jobs could simply be moved
somewhere else where the labor is cheap...
i don't know how good this example is but, in relation
to even white collar labor having mobility, i think of
an episode of tv nation where michael moore set up a
scenario where he planned to open up the headquarters
of a U.S. TV station in Mexico...

=====
"Darwin pointed out how, in numberless animal societies, the struggle between separate individuals for the means of existence disappears, how struggle is replaced by co-operation, and how that substitution results in the developement of intellectual and moral faculties which secure to the species the best conditions for survival. He intimated that in such cases the fittest are not the physically strongest, nor the cunningest, but those who learn to combine so as mutually to support each other, strong and weak alike, for the welfare of the community."
