The seeds are genetically engineered to grow into plants that only produce
sterile seeds. So then there is the chicken and egg question of how they get
a fertile seed to produce sterile offspring. The process by which this is
achieved involves treating the seeds with tetracycline before they are
packaged for sale. I believe the process is the thing that is patented by
Monsanto. There was a very thorough article about this in an issue of The
Ecologist about a year or so ago. In fact that was the issue that Monsanto
arranged to have ground to a pulp before it left the printer. Ever
resourceful the folks at The Ecologist got it out nonetheless although it
never made it to newsstands in the US I had access to it in my workplace,  a
library.
