Re: AUT: LIBERTY HALL in Liverpool

Gra,

Thanks for the post - there's much there that strikes a chord for me.

As you know, a number of us here in Melbourne have been trying to establish
something a little bit similar. Of late, though, I at least had become so
preoccupied with *first* finding a permanent venue and *then* "doing
things" that I had begun to miss the woods for the trees. For that reason
it's instructive to see that you've decided to start organising activities
without waiting to find a single "home" to house them all.

I also very much liked the following phrase in your post:

"Collectively our individuality can be expressed and it is accepted that
all established ideas and
assumptions should be questioned and critically examined".

Thinking again of the situation here, this seems the hardest thing to do:
moving beyond the often sterile debates of the past - sterile to the extent
that they have nothing useful to say about questions of class
composition/struggle in the here and now - rather than simply trying to
find some lowest common denominator that will satisfy everyone's
pre-existing ideological prejudices. On the other hand, on the few
occasions when I have witnessed a genuine attempt at such a "moving
beyond", it's been educational to hear just what comrades from a diversity
of traditions and experiences can start to come up with together.

I hope Liberty Hall goes well, and that you'll keep us posted on developments.

Steve
