AUT: repression in India

Friends,

The world must know that savage repression is still standard in India
for the thousands of farmers and indigenous people who resist the
Narmada dam project, even though a court order has suspended
construction for the last four years.

On January 12, 1998  the police fired on protesting farmers at Multai,
killing in cold blood. Last Tuesday, on the anniversary of the massacre,
police refused to permit the memorial ceremony and arrested Medha
Patkar, "alternative Nobel prize" winner and leader of the movement
along with 300 other people. We invite popular movements worldover, in
particular those of the Peoples' Global Action network, to condemn the
continuing repression of the Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA) and send
messages of support to NBA to:
