European Conference Against Unemployment, Discrimination, and Racism=20
23--24 January 1999, Cologne (Germany)=20
Note the date: 5 June 1999=20

On 5 June 1999 we'll meet in Cologne for a big demonstration against
unemployment, unprotected labour, discrimination, and racism. To
participate in the demonstration the European Marches will have set out
for Cologne from Prague, Luxemburg, Paris, Brussels, and other European
cities.=20
 =20
In Cologne they'll meet a counter summit debating from 3 to 7 June
criticism of EU politics and alternatives to the European Union.
Subsequently for two weeks an action camp between the EU summit and the
World Economic Summit (19 June) will take place.=20
 =20
The struggle against mass unemployment and poverty is our common concern.
20 Million people in Europe are still unemployed and 50 million live in
poverty. Social Democracy coming to power in many European countries has
engendered hope for a final end of the devastating heritage of neoliberal
politics lasting for almost two decades. Till now it does not seem that
those in power are willing to introduce a just distribution of labour and
wealth. Price stability and property protection are considered more
important than equal and human conditions of life in all countries of
Europe. The Maastricht criteria are still in full force as well as the "
stability pact ". As far as initiatives for employment have been
proclaimed (e.g. on the employment summit in Luxemburg in November 1997)
they were to create new low-wage jobs at the expense of social funds. This
policy divides our societies-racism and chauvinism will increase.=20
 =20
Those who are concerned must take their interests in their own hands. In
June 1999, when the new German government is to hold the EU presidency, we
will go to Cologne in order to express energetically our demands:=20
=B7 For the right of a paid employment.=20
=B7 For a guaranteed minimum wage securing a human existence for all people
living in Europe.=20
=B7 For immediate, massive, and coordinated reduction of working hours, wit=
h
full compensation of wages and employment without flexibilisation.=20
=B7 Against forced labour and forced part-time labour, against child labour=
,
against unprotected labour and low wages.=20
=B7 Against the enrichment of a minority at the expense of the majority, fo=
r
the redistribution of wealth.=20
=B7 Against all forms of discrimination-especially the discrimination of th=
e=20
homeless and handicapped, of women and unemployed, of migrants and
refugees, who-due to deprivation of their rights-suffer from racist
discrimination and violence. Equal civil and social rights for all!=20
 =20
In 1996 the European Marches Against Unemployment, Unprotected Labour and
Discrimination began to mobilise for these demands on a Europe-wide scale.
In June 1997 50,000 people came to a demonstration in Amsterdam. Since
then a solid network has been built mobilising against neoliberal politics
which is rooted in the social movements in Europe.=20
As it was already the case in Cardiff, in Amsterdam and earlier, an
international counter summit (parallel to the EU summit) will take place
in Cologne as well.
Various social, antifascist and antiracist groups and movements will offer
a lot of lectures, workshops and debates covering issues like
discrimination, poverty, handicap, homosexuality, ecology, culture,
development, peace, women, and democracy. The summit is to be a place
where movements from different countries and different fields will find
opportunities to reflect their developments, to establish contacts, and to
form networks.=20
 =20
At our European Conference Against Unemployment, Discrimination, and
Racism in Cologne on 23--24 January 1999 we will tackle the present policy
of the EU. We want to talk about the standardisation of our demands on a
European scale, about common actions and the possibilities of forming
networks between the various social, trade-union, antiracist, feminist,
and ecological movements. We want also to get in touch with those
initiatives which deal mainly with the preparation of activities against
the World Economic Summit.=20
 =20
The conference is open for all who want to participate in the preparation
of activities against the EU summit.=20
