Folks
You might also want to have a look at the Kitchener-Warterloo OCAP web site.
http://www.web.net/~gccwat/ocap/index.html
A few nights ago there was a documentary on the CBC dealing with Toronto
OCAP and a "rate payers" association in "Cabbagetown," a Toronto
neighbourhood that some property owners would like to gentrify. If only the
poor could find somewhere else to be poor, is pretty much the attitude of
the property owners.
OCAP has tended to polarize opinion, because of its direct action tactics
and ability to command media attention. This style led the Canadian Auto
Workers to contemplate withdrawing the funding it sends to OCAP. It seems
that CAW leader Buzz Hargrove got a letter from the leader of a rate payers
association complaining that OCAC had held pickets outside her house.
Hargrove later changed his mind after receiving criticism from OCAP and
other unions such as the Canadian Union of Postal Workers.
