Strike of Textileworkers in Indonesia

Since 3rd of August 98 about 1700 workers of a textilefactory
in Solo are on strike. The Hong Kong-based company ,PT Tyfountex,
has a workforce of 8000 in Solo. 80% of the workers are female..
It is their second strike there in 98.
The strikers demand continuation of payments to sick workers,
which is specified by labour law, but refused by management. And
they want higher wages in accordance with the rise of the legal
minimum wage.
The management locked out and  fired the strikers and hired 2000
scabs instead. Labour court ordered the re-employment of all
strikers, but the company did not obey court order.
The workers are organized in the KRKB, Komite Reformasi Kaum Buruh
(Working Class Committee for Reform). They held mass rallies and
800 of them went to the capital Jakarta to protest. A Solo
studentorganisation supports the struggle.
Without wages or strike pay the strikers depend on relatives or
casual jobs. They hardly have enough money to live, they cant
effort to send their children to school. When 200 workers went
to Jakarta for protest these days, they could not buy return
tickets. so they got stuck there.
