AUT: The Organization to Liberate Society

I would like to encourage all u.s. anarchists or
progressives of any stripe to join a new organization
called the Organization to Liberate Society (OLS).

Perhaps you have seen the article by Michael Albert
about the OLS (Z-Magazine, May 1998, pages 12-13).
The immediate goal of the OLS is to gage the size of
the far left and to begin linking people together. The OLS
is a non-hierarchical organization intent on recruiting until
it achieves a membership of one million. Our principles
are few in number and are broad and general in outlook.

We believe that:

*A society is more liberated to the extent that fewer
people are denied human rights or opportunities or in
any way oppressed due to race, religion, ethnicity, gender,
age, sexual preference, property ownership, wealth, income,
or statist authoritarianism and exclusion. Reducing and
ultimately removing such hierarchies of reward, circumstance,
status, or power would improve society.

*A society is more liberated to the degree that it fosters
solidarity such that its citizens, by the actions they must
take to survive and fulfill themselves, come to care about,
promote, and benefit from one another?s well being,
rather than getting ahead only at one another?s expense.

*A society is more liberated to the degree that its
citizens enjoy comparably rewarding and demanding
life experiences and equal incomes, assuming comparable
effort and sacrifice on their parts to contribute to the
social good.

*A society is more liberated to the extent that its
citizens are able to democratically influence decisions
proportionately as they are affected by those decisions
and have the circumstances, knowledge, and information
required for this level of participation.

*A society is more liberated to the extent that diversity
is fostered and nourished in social relations, in relations
with nature, and in all dimensions of life.
Beyond these general principles, we will not
begin to debate how to proceed to these goals
until we are a million strong. And then our course
shall be determined by the entire membership.

The OLS has no leaders, nor superstar
endorsements; it will grow simply through
word of mouth and the actions of its members.
Every member is an organizer, every member is
an advocate.

If you agree with the five principles enunciated
above, then I hope you will check out our web site
and become a member. And once you have enlisted,
I hope you will talk to your friends, your neighbors,
your family and acquaintances, anyone who might
subscribe to our general principles.

If you are interested, please visit our web site to

It is time to join together and flex our muscle.

Please excuse multiple postings.
