There's an interesting critique of Gramsci's belief in the necessity of
coercion in the production process in Guglielmo Carchedi's Problems in
Class Analysis. He argues that Gramsci's Taylorism -- like Lenin's, and
much of the old left's -- was part of a belief in the social neutrality of
technology and the division of labor. Socialism was seen as a change in the
ownership of the means of production, and workers would "freely" accept
discipline, control and surveillance in the workplace because the increase
in productivity would improve the distribution of income and tasks.
"Communist Saturdays", etc. ...
